Reducing freight surprises

Railcars loaded with stacked lumber on a rail line at sunrise

Freight rarely goes wrong at the last minute. It goes wrong early, in a decision nobody recorded, and then arrives as an invoice that does not match the quote.

The four decisions

  • Who arranges the load, and who carries the cost if it waits.
  • Whether the quoted rate assumed a full container or a part load.
  • The delivery window, and what happens to it when the mill runs late.
  • Which documents travel with the load, and who produces them.

Write them into the order

Each of these is a sentence. Put all four on the order at the moment it is confirmed, and the invoice has nothing left to argue about.
